Bergen County, NJ— Alpine Councilman David W. Kupferschmid has announced that he has switched parties from Democrat to Republican. This changes the make-up of the governing body to five Democrats on the council, a Democrat mayor, and Kupferschmid as the lone Republican councilman.
“It’s time! I’ve officially switched parties, and I am giving my full endorsement to Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican candidate for Governor of New Jersey.
Kupferschmid continued, “The Democrat Party I am leaving is unrecognizable to me. Ultra progressive radicals, like New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, have taken over and are being embraced by Mikie Sherrill. While Sherrill refuses to denounce the far-left radicals in her party, Jack Ciattarelli has been appealing to all sides with a common sense message that includes putting the brakes on over-development and cleaning up crime, both of which are critical issues for Alpine.”
Alpine is a conservative community, where President Trump won by 11 points last year. “The Democrat party does not represent us anymore,” said Kupferschmid. “With my switch, I will now be the first Republican on the council in more than 20 years. I hope that this is the beginning of a resurgence for the Republican Party in Alpine where alternate voices are much needed on the governing body.”
“This has been a long time coming,” said Kupferschmid. I’m proud to stand with our Republican leaders, and our great gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, as we all work to elect candidates who will make our state more affordable and safer for all residents.”
Bergen County Republican Organization Chairman Jack DeLorenzo welcomed Kupferschmid into the fold, “We reaffirm that the Bergen County and New Jersey Republican Party is a ‘big tent,’ with room for everyone. Hard-working local elected officials, such as Councilman Kupferschmid, who are willing to take a stand for what’s right for our county and state are what’s needed to halt over-development and make our neighborhoods safer for our citizens. We look forward to working with Dave on these and other issues of concern.”
“I would like to thank the Bergen County Republican Organization for welcoming me in with open arms, and I look forward to doing everything I can over the next few weeks to help Jack Ciattarelli become the next Governor,” concluded Kupferschmid.
Kupferschmid was first elected to the Alpine Borough Council in 2023 and is up for re-election in 2026.
